Regional and national governments across the world are confronting the challenge of phasing out fossil fuel-based power generation, while simultaneously addressing the economic and societal effects on their communities. One emerging approach to face this challenge is the establishment of “Stakeholder Commissions”, which bring together different actors who develop policy recommendations and negotiate agreements for an accelerated coal phase-out as well as the recovery of regions and communities. Such negotiations often result in financial compensation that helps local and regional actors prevent and alleviate the negative effects of energy policies.

However, key points remained unclear regarding the impact of financial resources invested in each European country. Here it is important to untangle not only how much money has been allocated for this purpose but also its effect on the pace of the energy transition. Similarly, when it comes to making that transformation more just, questions about how such resources were distributed and their recipients are equally important to leaving no one behind—in effect, How much are European countries paying to get rid of coal, and to whom?

This is the 9th online event of our CINTRAN capacity-building programme aimed at practitioners interested in learning more about the just energy transition in coal+ regions across Europe. Within this webinar, you will have the opportunity to learn from key speakers working at the core of these issues by answering the following questions:

  • What are the outcomes of “stakeholder commissions” in different European countries?
  • How are national and international compensation policies set up, and who are their ultimate beneficiaries?

Speakers include representatives from the Just Transition Platform, regional and local governments and the CINTRAN team with the latest research on the role of stakeholder commissions and financial compensation at and beyond the European level.
