Job losses in Ida Virumaa, Estonia

The oil shale industry in Estonia has been declining and climate targets have accelerated job losses in the Ida Virumaa region. In 2019, Eesti Energia, the state-owned company that runs the Narva power plant, announced 450 redundancies, and sent another 1300 workers on mandatory leave. This measure limited losses for the company but has accelerated unemployment and outmigration from the region.
