In February 2021, MVM, the Hungarian state-owned power company, and owner of the Mátra coal-fired Power Plant, stated it would finalize the schedule for the transformation of the Mátra Power Plant. The plan was to build a 500-megawatt gas-fired power plant by the end of 2025, at the same time investing in technology change by building a 200-MW solar plant and a 31.5-MW small-scale power plant for waste and biomass incineration based on existing infrastructure. Lignite-based energy production would last until 2025, and by 2029, reclamation and landscaping work would take place on the mine site. The government planned to implement the plan also with the help of EU funds.
