In 2019, the Japanese electric vehicle manufacturer GS Yuasa opened an electric vehicle lithium battery plant in the Hungarian city of Miskolc. The overall cost was €27M, with €1.6M contributed by the Hungarian government.

Miskolc is a heavy industry center with an existing skilled workforce in the automotive industry. It also has access to renewable geothermal energy. The plant employed 51 people when it opened, with projections of 400 jobs at full capacity.

The action represents a successful adaptive coping strategy on the part of the region to attract and maintain new investment.
