Ministerial visits in Kozani, West Macedonia (Greece)
In 2021, the Greek Deputy Minister of Development, Nikos Papathanasis, visited Kozani and spoke with the Mayor, Lazaros Maloutas, about the Just Development Transition Plan, and ongoing de-lignification in the region. The conversation focused on the transition pathway, on problems and challenges with the Just Development Transition Plan, and on attracting new investment to the region. Shortly afterwards, both the President of the Fair Development Transition Plan (SDAM), Kostis Mousouroulis, and Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, travelled to the region to meet with representatives from the University of Western Macedonia. Mitsotakis also then met with youth organisations, local bodies and entrepreneurs from the area.
This level of direct government interaction is not common but represents an opportunity for different actors to try to shape the transition pathway for the region.
