Municipal wind investment in North Rhine – Westphalia
In 2017 the Municipality of Bedburg, a coal town, announced that the investment in a wind farm on the edge of an open cast mine was already generating 1.5M€/year. The municipality had invested in the wind farm as an adaptive strategy to offset losses from the decline of the coal industry. This was a mid-transition decision and has proved successful. This strategy has the potential to lead to transformation as it reorganises control and profit distribution of energy generation resources in the area.
