Vision Days for a Fair Transition in Ida-Virumaa
Participatory visioning meeting on the future of the region
More than 450 people participated in the Vision Days for a Fair Transition. The event was an online web conference and was attended by both domestic and international actors. 40% of attendees came from Eastern Vira, while another third watched from Russia. The Vision Days took place on April 28 and 29 2021. Measures discussed during the Vision Days included 1) diversification of economic activities e.g. through hydrogen, construction materials and wood chemistry instead of oil shale energy, but also carbon capture and fine chemistry for oil shale; 2) the creation of high value-added jobs; 3) support for people negatively affected by the transition; 4) solutions to environmental problems; 5) opportunities to boost tourism e.g. the resort town of Narva-Jõesuu; 6) support for Estonian language instruction in schools; 7) renovation of the housing stock, while avoiding segregation and creating possibilities for social mobility; 8) the creation of the position of Minister of Ida-Virumaa.
