Creation of R&D centres
New initiatives for research, development and innovation
The development of Research and Development (R&D) Centres is an adaptive and potentially transformative coping strategy. It tends to be undertaken by networks or partnerships of government, industry and university or scientific actors. In the context of decarbonisation, these centres tend to be focused on developing new products and industrial processes in the energy or heavy industry sector. The CINTRAN database contains several examples of R&D centres focused on alternative fuels, hydrogen, and chemical feedstocks.
R&D centres tend to emerge from middle transition stages on as governments, often with EU support, begin to fund research into new industries that can replace those being phased out through decarbonisation.
