Education initiatives for energy transition
Education and vocational programs to help people develop skills for the energy transition
As carbon-intensive industries are phased out, and new energy industries develop, there is a need for training and education in these new areas. Several governments, together with schools and universities, are supporting the development of new training programs and degrees. These training programs are intended to mitigate the economic and social impact of job losses resulting from the phase out of carbon intensive industries. These are adaptive strategies with the potential to be transformative, depending on the extent to which educational opportunities change the lives of individuals, and the fortunes of communities.
Related, some universities are also developing research programs targeting new energy technologies. These programs are not degree or certificate programs but do provide additional training and opportunities to researchers.
Educational programs tend to emerge from middle transition stages on. This is especially true for initiatives sponsored by governments or through Just Transition Fund allocations. However, some programs emerge at early transition stages, at the discretion of individual universities or research institutes.
