Decarbonisation policies often lead to job losses for fossil fuel workers. This also affects the families and communities that depend on these jobs. Employee supports are usually adaptive strategies. They can be transformative if workers are able to use opportunities to fundamentally shift their individual careers or positions.

Governments at all levels support workers through state funds, or Just Transition Fund allocations. This can include retraining programs, or severance. Companies sometimes offer job opportunities in other areas of their operation. While new opportunities provide employment, these options sometimes require the relocation of workers and their families. New opportunities can also be challenging for older workers for whom retraining may not make sense.
