LNG-powered train in Asturias (Spain)
In December 2017, Spain’s national railway company, Renfe, carried out the first pilot test in Europe of a passenger train powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The aim of the pilot was to use this type of train in the future in the commercial services of transregional trains operating in northern Spain.
The pilot test, which lasted four months, was carried out on a 20-kilometer stretch on the metric gauge road that connects Figaredo and Trubia, in Asturias. This project was part of Renfe’s rolling stock renovation plan, which contemplates the incorporation of trains powered by less polluting fuels such as natural gas or hydrogen to replace diesel trains.
