Repurposing former fossil fuel sites
Converting former coal or oil shale sites for other energy or industrial uses
Many governments and fossil fuel industries are coping with decarbonisation by repurposing land formerly devoted to mining or fossil fuel extraction. This is an adaptive strategy that attempts to retain value from company assets, and make use of existing physical and human resources, knowledge, and capabilities. While several examples in our inventory are still in the planning and proposals stage, there are many others that have already begun to shift activities.
Plans for repurposing sites often involve the development of renewable energy infrastructure such as solar farms. Some companies are also developing plans to either create, convert or use hydrogen. Finally, some companies are looking to convert their properties to general industrial parks. In many circumstances, repurposing activities are being supported through Just Transition Fund allocations.
