Wine tourism in Western Macedonia
In September 2021, the Municipality of Amyntaio in Western Macedonia decided to transform the town’s old mine into a vineyard of 1,000 acres. The goal was to carry out the first plantings in the spring of 2022. The contractor for the mine restoration project would most likely be the public company utility, PPC. As the area belonged to the property of the municipality, the municipality created a social economy body, in the form of a social cooperative, in which farmers and unemployed people in the area could participate. In November 2021, at the 2nd Wine Tourism Conference of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Tourism proposed a ‘wine-exit strategy’ for the development of Western Macedonia in the post-coal era: namely, the development of a wine industry in the region.
